Abstract

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), the final messenger, is a blessing for all of humanity. His personality was flawless, both spiritually and physically. Numerous narrations in Seerah and Hadith books emphasize his miraculous personality and the extraordinary events during his life. However, certain matters, particularly those related to his birth and early life, have varying opinions. One such topic is the circumcision of the Prophet. This article presents an analytical examination of the various opinions regarding the circumcision of the Prophet. Three main views are found in classical Islamic sources. The first opinion is that the Prophet was born already circumcised. The second is that the circumcision occurred during the miraculous event of "Shaqq al-Sadr" (the splitting of the chest) by the angel Gabriel. However, the narrations supporting these two views are generally weak or even fabricated. The third opinion, which is preferred by scholars, states that the Prophet's circumcision followed the Arab custom and was performed by his grandfather, Abdul Muttalib. This view is supported by comparatively stronger narrations and aligns with the prevailing Arab tradition, where circumcision was a source of pride. This article critically analyzes these various perspectives, evaluating the authenticity of the narrations.
