Abstract

Mosques have long been essential for the development and preservation of Islamic civilization and culture. These sacred places serve much more than just places of worship. They are centers of communal life, education, and cultural exchange. In this research study, we examine the historical significance of mosques in shaping Islamic civilization, assess their contemporary role in a rapidly changing world, and explore the impact of technology on their functions and influence. Throughout history, mosques have played a crucial role in the development of Islamic civilization. As centers of worship, mosques provide Muslims with a sacred place to perform their prayers and connect with the divine. Beyond their religious functions, mosques also serve as centers for community gatherings and social interactions. For instance, the Friday prayer (Jema'ah) brings together Muslims from diverse backgrounds, fostering a sense of unity and solidarity among believers. Additionally, mosques have functioned as educational institutions, where imams and scholars impart Islamic teachings and values to the community. This educational role of mosques is vital for transmitting Islam’s rich intellectual heritage, covering fields such as theology, law, and philosophy. Through sermons, classes, and study circles, mosques have played a significant role in preserving and disseminating Islamic knowledge and culture across generations.
