جامع البیان میں ابنِ جریرؒکا منہجِ ترجیح
The Preferential Approach of Ibn Jarir in Jami' al-Bayan
Abstract
In occasions where the Ṣaḥāba , may Allah be pleased with them, (companions of Rasool-ul-Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), Tābiʿīn (the generation of Muslims after Ṣaḥāba) and mufassirin (those who interprets the Quran) exhibit differing interpretations of a certain āyah (a verse of the Holy Quran) or portion of an āyah, the task of discerning the precise connotation for the reader or pursuer of guidance from the Divine Word becomes complicated and challenging. This intricacy is additionally intensified by the absence of a clear and explicit āyah or Hadith to clarify the āyah in question. Remarkably, Ibn Jarir al-Tabari establishes extraordinary expertise in presenting and assessing dissimilar views amongst mufassirin. His distinguishing practice for evaluating and preferring challenging interpretations and views is mainly notable. His acquaintance with manhaj-e-tarjeeh (preferential methodology), can help readers of tafsir reaching to a more nuanced understanding of Quranic exegesis, allowing scholars and researchers to reach at a rajeh (preponderant) and saib (unerring) interpretation.
